How we help

Worried about your wet belt? We’ll take it from here.

Wet belts are a known weak point on many modern Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall and Honda engines. Leave it too long and a worn belt can starve the engine of oil or snap altogether. At that point a planned repair becomes a replacement engine.

We specialise in this one job, so you get a fixed price, the correct parts and a technician who has done it many times before. Tell us your car and we’ll handle the rest.

Ford Transit owners

The Transit is the van we see most with wet belt trouble

Since 2016, most Transits and Transit Customs have used the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel with a wet belt. Working vans cover big miles fast, so many reach the belt interval years early.

The hidden engine killer

What is a wet belt, and why does it matter?

A conventional cambelt runs outside the engine. A wet belt runs inside it, permanently bathed in hot engine oil. Manufacturers chose this design because it is quieter, lighter and more efficient.

The trade-off is durability. Over time the oil attacks the rubber, the belt begins to shed fragments, and those fragments can block the oil pickup strainer. Either the engine loses oil pressure or the belt fails completely, and the usual result is a destroyed engine.

Service intervals have been shortened

Manufacturers have revised wet belt intervals downwards more than once as real-world failures emerged. Many engines now need attention at around 6 years or 60,000 miles, which is far sooner than the original schedule. If you bought your car second-hand, the belt may already be due.

Warning signs

Signs your wet belt may be failing

Catch it early and it’s a routine job. If you notice any of these, stop and get it checked before the damage spreads.

Speak to a specialist

Sign 1

Low oil pressure warning

A flickering or constant oil light can mean the pickup strainer is being blocked by belt debris.

Sign 2

Rattling on cold start

A ticking or rattling noise for the first few seconds often points to a stretched belt or worn tensioner.

Sign 3

Loss of power or limp mode

Timing errors and poor oil pressure can trigger reduced-power mode to protect the engine.

Sign 4

Rubber flakes in the oil

Black fragments on the dipstick or in drained oil are a clear sign the belt is breaking down.

Sign 5

Engine management light

Camshaft and crankshaft correlation fault codes are a common early warning of belt wear.

Sign 6

Hard starting or misfires

Rough running, hesitation or difficulty starting can follow once the belt timing begins to drift.

The real damage

Where the rubber ends up

As a wet belt breaks down, the bits don’t disappear. They collect on the oil pickup strainer until oil can’t get through, and the engine starts running short of pressure. That’s why we take the strainer out and clean it on every job, not just fit a new belt.

FAQ

Wet belt questions, answered

The things drivers ask us most. Anything else, just call.

What is a wet belt?

A wet belt is a rubber timing belt that runs inside the engine, bathed in engine oil, rather than outside it like a conventional cambelt. Manufacturers use it because it is quieter and more efficient, but constant exposure to hot oil means it can degrade faster than expected.

Which cars have a wet belt?

The most common are the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost (Fiesta, Focus, Puma, EcoSport), Ford 2.0 EcoBlue (Transit, Transit Custom, Ranger), the 1.2 PureTech engine used by Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall, and the Honda Civic 1.0 VTEC Turbo. If you are unsure, send us your registration and we will check for you.

When should my wet belt be replaced?

Manufacturer intervals have been reduced several times. As a general guide, many engines now need inspection or replacement at around 6 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, or sooner if you notice any warning signs. We’ll advise on your specific engine.

What are the symptoms of a failing wet belt?

Common signs include a low oil pressure warning, rattling on cold start, the engine management light, loss of power or limp mode, and black rubber particles in the oil. Some belts give no warning at all, which is why replacement by age and mileage is important.

How much does wet belt replacement cost?

Prices depend on your engine. Use our instant price calculator for a fixed price for your exact vehicle, covering parts, labour, oil and filter, before any work begins. Or use the quote form or call us for your price.

How long does the job take?

Most vehicles are with us for around 2 working days. That gives time to clean the sump and oil system properly and for sealants to cure before the engine is run. We will confirm the timing when you book.

Why do you take the sump off?

As the old belt breaks down it sheds into the oil, and the debris collects on the oil pickup strainer in the sump. If that is not cleaned, the engine can be starved of oil even after the new belt goes on. We remove and clean it on every wet belt job.

Can I keep driving with wet belt symptoms?

We would advise against it. Once the belt is shedding debris, oil starvation or belt failure can happen without further warning, and the resulting engine damage is far more expensive than a replacement. Call us and we will advise on the safest next step.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. Every wet belt replacement comes with a 12-month parts and labour warranty, along with photos of the old belt and a written record for your service history.
